National scientific institutions in 6 countries have claimed that biotechnology used in agriculture is in the hands of poor countries.
National science institutions from India, Mexico, Brazil, China, Great Britain and the United States and the Third World Academy of Sciences of Trieste have published a joint report. In it, multinationals have called for the biotechnology developed to be distributed with developing countries.
For example, multinationals who are earning large sums of money at the expense of GM crops have been proposed to develop seeds that grow well in the climatic or brackish conditions of those countries. In fact, they ask that some of these benefits be allocated to the development of products for third world countries.
The response of multinationals has been immediate. The Monsanto company, for example, has announced its intention to do so with the rice genome.
