Heart disease vaccines
Avant Inmunotherapeutics, from Massachusetts, has discovered a vaccine that reduces the risk of heart disease in rabbits. This vaccine keeps “good cholesterol” in the blood and reduces “bad cholesterol”, decreasing the risk of arteriosclerosis. Arteriosclerosis is an abnormal loss of thickening and elasticity that the walls of the arteries suffer, especially in old age.
The onset of this disease is related to the level of cholesterol, the level of “bad cholesterol”. At the moment, this vaccine that has only been tested in rabbits increases the levels of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) or “good cholesterol” by 35% and reduces the generation of plaques that obstruct the artery by 40%. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) or “bad cholesterol” come from HDL, a vaccine that reduces the activity of the chemical agent responsible for this change.
Next summer the company will begin working on the adaptation of the vaccine to the human being to overcome the safety tests that will have to pass in order to use it.
