From human stem cells have created an organoid that simulates the human stomach. The organoid has a 3D structure and equivalent to the functional cells of the human stomach. According to researchers who have developed the organoid, this stomach model created in vitro is more realistic than the animal model to investigate the development and diseases of the human stomach. There are anatomical and functional differences between animal models and human stomachs.

The stomach model was created at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the results have been published in the journal Nature. The usefulness of the model has been demonstrated against infection by the bacteria H. pylori (cause of gastric ulcers) and have verified that the model adequately reflects the phenomena that occur in the first steps of the infection.
