Harder surfaces

The addition of nitrogen to metals and alloys has allowed to harden the surface of some materials and improve their wear resistance.

The addition of nitrogen to metals and alloys has allowed researchers from the research center of the Public University of Navarra and the Association of Industries by adding nitrogen to metals and alloys and improving wear resistance. They have improved by 30-500%. These results can be of great interest for industrial applications such as aeronautics or biomeditation.

Researchers have found that ion implant techniques are appropriate tools to improve the surface properties of certain materials. Nitrogen atoms accelerate and collide with the surface to be modified to ionize them.
