The gene responsible for catatonic schizophrenia is discovered

Scientists at Wuerzburg University in Germany have discovered the gene responsible for catatonic schizophrenia. It was discovered during the study of human chromosome 22 genes and the coding protein is similar to ion channels. Ion channels are the proteins that are produced in the cell membrane and their function is to transport the electrical current between neurons. Catatonic schizophrenia is characterized by severe psychomotor problems, i.e. rigid postures, automatic responses and great negativism.
